How many questions are in SQE1 and how long is it?

SQE1 is two assessments, FLK1 and FLK2, of 180 single best answer questions each, 360 in total. Each assessment is sat on a separate day at a Pearson VUE test centre and is split into two sessions of 90 questions lasting 2 hours 33 minutes, with a 60-minute break. That is about 1.7 minutes a question. The exam is closed book.

FLK1 covers Business Law and Practice, Dispute Resolution, Contract Law, Tort, Legal System of England and Wales, Legal Services. FLK2 covers Property Law and Practice, Wills and the Administration of Estates, Solicitors Accounts, Land Law, Trusts Law, Criminal Liability, Criminal Law and Practice. Each subject is 14 to 20% of its paper, except Legal Services at 12 to 16% and Solicitors Accounts, which is examined within Property and Wills.

How is SQE1 marked and what is the pass mark?

One mark per correct answer and no negative marking. The pass mark is set for each sitting by the Assessment Board using the Modified Angoff method and statistical equating, then results are placed on a 0 to 500 scale with the pass always at 300. Each FLK has its own pass mark and you must pass both. The raw percentage is not published; for the first sitting in November 2021 the SRA said it was 57% for FLK1 and 56% for FLK2.

How many attempts do I get?

You have six years to complete SQE1 and SQE2, counted from the first day you sit your first SQE assessment, with up to three attempts at each. If you pass one FLK and fail the other you resit only the one you failed.

How is SQE2 marked?

Every assessment criterion is graded A to F and converted to marks out of 5 (A is 5, F is 0). Skills marks and law marks are averaged separately, combined with equal weight for each station, and the 16 station percentages are averaged. There is one pass mark for the whole exam, reported on a 0 to 500 scale with the pass at 300. Interviews are marked by the trained actor playing the client, on skills only. Everything else is marked by a solicitor qualified in England and Wales. From 1 September 2026, ethics and professional conduct is graded as its own law criterion at every station.

Which practice areas does SQE2 cover, and what is left out?

Criminal Law and Practice (drawing on Criminal Liability); Dispute Resolution (drawing on Contract Law and Tort); Property Practice (drawing on Land Law); Wills and the Administration of Estates (drawing on Trusts Law); Business Law and Practice (drawing on Contract Law). Are SQEEZE's questions the SRA's sample questions?

No. SQEEZE writes its own questions in SRA style, with every option explained. The SRA publishes 220 sample questions, 130 of them used in real sittings with the percentage of candidates who got each right, at https://sqe.sra.org.uk/assessments/sqe1-assessments/sqe1-sample-questions. A PAST QUESTIONS mode that presents them under the SRA's terms, with SQEEZE's own explanations clearly marked as ours, is on the way.

Does SQEEZE cover the SQE2 oral stations?

Not yet. SQEEZE covers the four written skills now, timed to the SRA station clock. An AI client and AI judge for the interview and advocacy stations are being built around the SRA's assessment criteria; join the waitlist on the SQE2 page to hear first.
